Greystones: Sir William Angliss rural estate sells for first time in 90 years

Publish date: 2024-05-14

The rural estate of the late Sir William Charles Angliss has sold for the first time in 90 years for a whopping $80m.

While the sale price of the 148-year-old property is undisclosed, industry sources indicate it changed hands in early November for the lofty sum.

The 565 Glenmore Rd, Rowsley home, known as Greystones, has been tightly held by Sir William’s family since his death in 1957.

A prominent businessman, politician and philanthropist, Sir William was renowned for his pioneering work in meat refrigeration and exporting and was widely known as the “meat king”.

He also funded the William Angliss Institute of TAFE trade school.

The 4033ha sheep and cattle farm, along with its 13-bedroom bluestone mansion, first hit the market in April with an unlisted asking price and lingered for a further seven months until its recent sale.

Public records show the title of the property was held by Sir William’s granddaughter, Diana Gibson, the main beneficiary of his estate and wife of late Liberal MP and lawyer Adrian Gibson.

In addition to the 147-year-old mansion and agricultural landholding, the sale of the Rowsley property also included its horse stables, machinery, hay and storage sheds and even an air strip.

Colliers International Agribusiness agents James Beer and Thomas Quinn had the listing but declined to comment on the sale.
